Sanju Samson vs Rishabh Pant – Who is India’s True Wicketkeeper?

Sanju Samson vs Rishabh Pant – Who is India’s True Wicketkeeper?

Meta Description:

A detailed comparison of Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant as India’s wicketkeepers. Explore stats, skills, strengths, weaknesses, and who truly deserves the spot behind the stumps.

Sanju Samson vs Rishabh Pant – Who is India’s True Wicketkeeper?

Wicketkeeping has always been one of the most crucial roles in cricket. India, blessed with a rich history of great keepers such as Syed Kirmani, Kiran More, Nayan Mongia, and of course MS Dhoni, now finds itself in a debate between two modern-day stars – Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant. Both are highly talented, dynamic, and explosive with the bat, but the million-dollar question is: Who is India’s true wicketkeeper?

Let’s dive into their journeys, skills, stats, and the factors that make them unique.

1. Early Career and Background

Sanju Samson

Born in Kerala, Sanju Samson rose through domestic cricket and age-group tournaments with a reputation for elegant stroke play. His IPL journey with Rajasthan Royals made him a household name. While he has had many starts for Team India, consistency has often eluded him. His style is calm, collected, and technically sound, reminding many fans of classic batsmen rather than a pure power hitter.

Rishabh Pant

Pant, hailing from Delhi, is a fearless cricketer. He shot into limelight with his blistering batting in U-19 cricket and later made waves with Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in the IPL. Aggressive, attacking, and unafraid of risks, Pant’s career took a sharp turn with his match-winning performances in Test cricket, most notably in Australia (2021), where he helped India script history at the Gabba.

2. Batting Prowess

Sanju Samson

Style: Elegant, timing-based, classical.

Strengths: Square cuts, lofted drives, spin playing ability.

Format suitability: Ideal for T20s and ODIs.

Consistency: Often criticized for not converting starts into big scores at international level.

Rishabh Pant

Style: Explosive, fearless, and improvisational.

Strengths: Sweeps, reverse sweeps, six-hitting ability, handling pace under pressure.

Format suitability: Best suited for Tests and ODIs, though effective in T20s too.

Impact: Known for match-winning knocks, not just contributions.

Numbers (as of 2025)

Samson’s ODI average hovers around 40+, with a strike rate above 100, showing his capability in limited overs.

Pant’s Test average of 43+ with centuries in England, Australia, and South Africa speaks volumes of his adaptability.

3. Wicketkeeping Skills

Sanju Samson

Technically sound behind the stumps.

Safe hands, quick reflexes, and neat glove work.

Less flashy but more consistent with fewer errors.

Rishabh Pant

Not always the most technically polished, but highly athletic.

Excellent in tough overseas conditions.

Agile and vocal, constantly motivating bowlers – a trait India missed post-Dhoni.

While Samson is a “safe” keeper, Pant is a “game-changer” with his energy and presence.

4. Temperament and Match Situations

Samson: Often plays with composure, but critics say he lacks the ability to dominate crunch situations at international level.

Pant: Loves pressure. His ability to counterattack under duress (e.g., Sydney and Brisbane Tests in 2021) makes him a fan favorite.

5. Fitness and Injuries

Pant suffered a horrific car accident in late 2022, forcing him out of cricket for more than a year. His comeback in 2024 showed resilience, but questions remain about his long-term fitness. Samson, on the other hand, has stayed relatively injury-free but has had fewer chances due to competition.

6. IPL vs International Cricket

Samson in IPL: Rajasthan Royals’ backbone, with multiple match-winning innings. However, his IPL heroics haven’t fully translated into consistent India performances.

Pant in IPL: A proven performer for Delhi Capitals and also a successful captain. Internationally, his record is stronger, especially in Tests.

7. Leadership Qualities

Samson: Calm, composed, and tactical. His captaincy in IPL is respected, and he has shown maturity in leading Rajasthan Royals.

Pant: Aggressive and instinctive. Though still learning, he has leadership qualities similar to Dhoni in terms of on-field energy.

8. Who Fits Which Format?

Tests: Rishabh Pant is India’s automatic choice because of his match-winning ability overseas and fearless stroke play. Samson hasn’t played Tests yet.

ODIs: A close call. Pant provides x-factor, but Samson has shown more consistency in the middle order recently.

T20s: Samson’s explosiveness and clean hitting make him a better pick, though Pant’s unpredictability can be both a strength and weakness.

9. Fan Base and Popularity

Both Samson and Pant enjoy massive fan support. Samson’s Kerala following is unmatched, with fans rallying behind him for more opportunities. Pant, on the other hand, has won hearts globally with his fearless cricket and his comeback story post-accident.

10. The Verdict – Who is India’s True Wicketkeeper?

If we analyze purely on impact and match-winning ability, Rishabh Pant edges ahead. His overseas Test centuries, ability to take on the best bowlers in crunch situations, and high-energy wicketkeeping make him India’s No.1 choice.

However, Sanju Samson is not far behind. In limited overs, especially ODIs and T20Is, Samson deserves a longer run. His composure, consistency, and leadership could make him India’s first-choice white-ball keeper in the near future.

My Opinion

In my view, Rishabh Pant is India’s true wicketkeeper across formats, especially for Tests and ODIs. His match-winning ability is rare and invaluable. That said, Sanju Samson must be backed more in white-ball cricket. India has the luxury of two highly talented wicketkeepers, and the team should use them wisely depending on formats.

Instead of framing it as a rivalry, India should see it as an opportunity – Pant for Tests and ODIs, Samson for T20s and as a backup in ODIs.
